Inspiring Racial Awareness

Project Overview

KnowVate Hub, in collaboration with Startup Grind Scotland and Black Professionals United Kingdom, developed a programme to empower and educate Black and Minority Ethnic communities about entrepreneurial opportunities across Scotland. The campaign was born out of a recognition of the need to address the underrepresentation of ethnic minorities in Scottish entrepreneurship. The project delivered entrepreneurial events, including workshops and fireside chats, in four cities: Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Stirling, attracting over 300 attendees and developed an online platform to host in-studio recordings of business workshops and entrepreneurial stories and provide ongoing support for ethnic minority entrepreneurs.

Impact

The programme created meaningful connections and opportunities for participants:

  • Several valuable connections were established between participants and support organisations
  • Participants were introduced to the Techscaler programme and Barclays Eagle Labs Funding readiness programme
  • Collaborative projects among the attendees were fostered. One such collaboration is the Afro-Caribbean Food and Drink Festival (LADHA), which was launched in April, 2024 with over 500 attendees.
  • Food and drink producers were signposted to relevant sector-specific support including ONE Food and Drink and Scotland Food and Drink
  • The KnowVate Online Resource Platform was launched and is currently providing ongoing support for over 130 users.
  • Ongoing impact continued through the development of the Ideation Bootcamp programme with NatWest Group, which supported over 60 budding entrepreneurs looking to start their businesses.

In Their Words

"We are grateful for the opportunity to continue serving our community in this manner and remain dedicated to fostering a global network of Black and other ethnic minority entrepreneurs, with Scotland as the focal point"
